Exakt eine Woche nach Freigabe der vielversprechenden Windows Vista PreRC1 Build 5536 hat Microsoft den wichtigen Release-Candidate-1-Meilenstein erreicht: Technische Beta-Tester haben nun Zugriff auf die englische Version von Windows Vista RC1 für x32- und x64-Systeme.
Der Release Candidate 1 von Vista trägt die genaue Versionsnummer 5600.16384.060829-2230 und wurde damit bereits vor drei Tagen fertig gestellt. Die Größe ist im Vergleich zu Build 5536 minimal auf 2,58 GB geschrumpft, bleibt jedoch ein großer Brocken. Für die x64-Variante für Prozessoren mit der 64-Bit-Erweiterung EM64T/AMD64 schlägt sie mit 3,67 GB zu Buche.

Microsoft will Windows Vista RC1 in mehren Phasen an über sechs Millionen Tester ausliefern. Den Anfang machen heute 20.000 technische Betatester Microsofts (TechBeta), denen die Software über Connect.Microsoft.com ab sofort zur Verfügung steht. In der kommenden Woche soll die Software 500.000 MSDN- und TechNet-Abonnenten sowie drei Millionen Menschen im Rahmen des Customer Preview Program (CPP) kostenlos zur Verfügung stehen. Weitere zwei Millionen sollen über DVD-Beilagen in Zeitschriften erreicht werden.
Windows Vista soll im Oktober 2006 fertiggestellt werden. Microsoft bleiben damit zwei Monate um ihrem langerwarteten Betriebssystem-Release den letzten Feinschliff zu verpassen. Die fertige Version von Vista soll aus dem Entwicklungszweig der Buildnummer 5700 stammen. Es wird erwartet, dass diese Version mit RTM in Version 6000 umbenannt wird.

You’ll notice a lot ofimprovements since Beta 2. We’ve made some UI adjustments, added moredevice drivers, and enhanced performance. We’re not done yet, however —quality will continue to improve. We’ll keep plugging away onapplication compatibility, as well as fit and finish, until RTM. If youare an ISV, RC1 is the build you should use for certifying yourapplication.
The operating system is in great shape with RC1,but there’s still a lot of testing to do. You’ve come through for us sofar, and I’m asking you to once again put the pedal to the metal andsend us feedback. Windows Vista is going to touch hundreds of millionsof lives all around the world.
