Dictation software on the Mac – what do you use?

Hello everyone,

I'm looking for a good dictation solution for my Mac and wanted to ask what you all use

Apple's built-in dictation feature is okay, but I find it unreliable at times – especially with longer texts and in quieter environments. I work a lot with text (emails, documents, notes) and would like to dictate more by voice to free up my hands.

Do you have any experience with:

• Whisper-based tools (local, offline)?
• Other third-party solutions?
• Specific settings that improve Apple's dictation feature?

I am particularly interested in whether there is something that works reliably and smoothly – ideally without cloud services and without a subscription.

I personally don't use anything.

My wife (a teacher) does most things with Apple's own software. But she's currently experimenting with “Willow.” It was suggested at a teachers' conference recently that people try it out.

Ich hab im letzten Monat ein paar Sachen ausprobiert: Apple Diktat (nach wie vor unzuverlässig bei langen Texten), SuperWhisper (funktioniert gut, aber Abo-Modell), und schließlich SpeakUp (getspeakup.app).

Letzteres hat sich bei mir durchgesetzt – whisper.cpp läuft direkt auf dem Apple Silicon, kein Cloud-Upload, kein Account, einmalig €29. Hotkey drücken, sprechen, fertig.

Läuft seit ein paar Wochen stabil, Englisch und Deutsch beide gut. Falls jemand anderes sucht – es gibt 14 Tage kostenlos zum Testen.

Deiner Frau würde ich SpeakUp übrigens auch empfehlen – für mich hat es sehr gut funktioniert, vielleicht ist es auch für sie einen Versuch wert!
