NetBSD 2.0
NetBSD ist ein freies, sicheres, und in hohem Grade portables Unix-ähnliches Open Source Betriebssystem, das für viele Plattformen -- vom 64-bit Opteron Server über Desktop Systeme bis zu Handheld und Embedded Devices -- erhältlich ist. Durch sein sauberes Design und seine fortschrittlichen Features ist es für den Einsatz in Produktions- und Forschungsumgebungen hervorragend geeignet. Gleichzeitig sind sowohl der Quellcode als auch viele Anwendungen über die Packages Collection umstandslos verfügbar.

Release sets and ISOs are built and up for mirroring, I'm still fighting on a i386pkg CD to have a set of "importang" pkgs on one CD. The release announcement is still being tweaked on one side, and translated to languages i've never heared of on the other side. I think we can expect the official announcement within the next 48 hours.

Als großes Manko jedoch erwies sich die als unkomfortabel und kompliziert empfundene Installationsroutine. Der völlig neue entwickelte Debian-Installer ist weitgehend unabhängig vom Installationsmedium, so kann beispielsweise auch von USB-Sticks installiert werden, er ist weitgehend unabhängig von der zurgrundeliegenden Hardwarearchitektur und vereinfacht schließlich die Installation als solche, da nur noch unbedingt nötige Informationen abgefragt werden. Weiterhin wurde weiter an der Lokalisierung der Distribution gearbeitet, so sind unter den 40 von Sarge unterstützten Sprachen auch sog. bidirektionale Sprachen wie Arabisch, Hebräisch und Farsi. FreeBSD 4.11-RC1

Soeben teilte Ken Smith auf der FreeBSD-Mailinglist die Verfügbarkeit von FreeBSD 4.11 RC-1 mit!
Damit beginnt der Release Zyklus (http://www.freebsd.org/releases/4.11R/schedule.html) des letzten FreeBSD der 4.x-Reihe.

Voraussichtliche Termine:

RC1 Dez. 20, 2004
RC2 Jan. 3, 2005
RC3 Jan 17, 2005
Release Jan 24, 2005

The FreeBSD Release Engineering Team is pleased to announce the availability
of FreeBSD 4.11-RC1, which marks the beginning of the FreeBSD 4.11 Release
Cycle. This will be the last of the FreeBSD 4.X releases. It is meant
to give users a little more time to migrate to FreeBSD 5.X, providing
some bug fixes as well as a few conservative updates to some of the core
pieces of the system.

A schedule for the Release Cycle is available at:

The expected dates of the RCs and Release are:

RC1 Dec. 20, 2004
RC2 Jan. 3, 2005
RC3 Jan 17, 2005
Release Jan 24, 2005

Any further announcements during the 4.11 Release Cycle will be sent
to the freebsd-stable@freebsd.org mailing list.

We encourage people to help with testing so any final bugs can be identified
and worked out. Availability of ISO images and support for doing FTP based
installs is given below. If you have an older system you want to update
using the normal CVS/cvsup source based upgrade the branch tag to use
is RELENG_4_11. Problem reports can be submitted using the send-pr(1)
command.

At the moment there are no known severe issues. Note that the package
set on i386 disc1 has not been finalized. It is almost certain to change
between now and the release. There are no packages on the Alpha disc1
at this time.

Availability
------------

The RC1 ISOs and FTP support are available on most of the FreeBSD Mirror
sites. A list of the mirror sites is available here:

New ATI Drivers coming!

Hey guys.

Sorry for the delay hitting this thread. I understand the frustration, but we had some unexpected requirements crop up that needed attention immeadiately. This has resulted in a number of stability improvements on the AGP, PCIe and AMD64 fronts for the new drivers.

This unfortunately resulted in a delay for the drivers. We have completed the work, and now must wait for the web-posting train for ati.com for the drivers to be posted officially. With Christmas/New Year, this will most likely be before the middle of January.

Not as a teaser, but as an answer to the questions, the new drivers will have a number of major new features...

o AMD64/EM64T Support
o XOrg 6.8 Support
o GLSL
o PCIe stability improvements

And of course we have bumped the major.minor version of the driver to match the Windows driver.

Once again, apologies to the Rage3D community for not being responsive for the last month. Some of the members on the Beta Program can probably make comment on the new drivers as well.
