Apple has launched its newest iPhone, the iPhone 5. It is a conservative upgrade of the handset, with most of the updated features having accurately been predicted or leaked.
The main improvement on the new handset is a four-inch screen, which is slightly larger than existing iPhone handsets.
OTHER FEATURES OF NOTE:
It has Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology, commonly referred to as 4G. This means that it connect to the internet at speeds of up to 100 megabits per second (Mbs). In Ireland, there will not be 4G networks for at least another year.
It has a new processor that is, Apple says, twice as fast as the iPhone’s existing A5 processor.
It is 18 per cent thinner than the iPhone 4S.
It is 20 per cent lighter than the iPhone 4S.
It has a longer battery life, with 8 hours talktime, 8 hours video or internet browsing or 40 hours of music listening.
It has a new connector that will not work with existing iPhone dock speakers. However, the company will sell you an adaptor for the new connector to work with the old connections.
Touch sensors are built into the screen, making the display 30 per cent thinner.
It has an upgraded operating system, iOS6, that has enhanced mapping and other features. iOS6 will be launched on September 19th.
It has updated Siri, the iPhone's voice recognition 'assistant' to offer more suggestions and answers to more varied questions.
The new iPhone will cost the same as the existing iPhone 4S, with iPhone 4S and iPhone 4 models discounted.
The iPhone will be available on sale in the US, Britain and seven other large countries on September 21st. The handset is likely to be available in Irish stores from September 28th.
A new version of iTunes was also announced.
Its 8-megapixel camera now has a panorama mode.
