Mit dem freien Betriebssystem Pop!_OS 22.04 veröffentlicht der amerikanische Computerhersteller und Linux-Distributor System76 ein neues Ubuntu-Derivat mit der hauseigenen Cosmic UX, einer UI auf Basis der Desktop-Umgebung Gnome 42, und dem Systemkernel Linux 5.16. Als Neuerung ziehen planbare Updates mit ein.
Updates werden besser planbar
Neben einer fehlerbereinigten Cosmic UX, die seit ihrer Einführung mit dem Release von Pop!_OS 21.04 und dem Featureset in Pop!_OS 21.10 keine nennenswerten neuen Funktionen erhalten hat, nennen die offiziellen Release Notes insbesondere die planbaren Aktualisierungen für Debian-, Flatpak- und Nix-Softwarepakete.
Die Versionshinweise zu Pop!_OS 22.04 nennen zudem ein neues Panel für Updates und die Systemwiederherstellung in den Einstellungen des Betriebssystems.
Automatic Updates
Update and upgrade Pop!_OS automatically from the OS Upgrade & Recovery panel in Settings!
Minimize interruption by scheduling what day & time that you want your computer to perform the updates. Scheduled automatic updates include support for Debian, Flatpak, and Nix packages.
To reduce distractions, notifications for available updates are set to show weekly by default. The frequency can also be set to daily or monthly notifications.
Notifications won’t show if you have automatic updates enabled. Automatic updates are turned off by default.

Neuer Scheduler für mehr Leistung
Automatische Updates hingegen sind jetzt standardmäßig nicht mehr aktiviert und müssen erst auf Wunsch des Anwenders scharf geschaltet werden. Der neu entwickelte System76-Scheduler soll die Leistung laufender Anwendungen verbessern und die zur Verfügung stehenden Ressourcen intelligenter verteilen. Die Leistung soll dabei automatisch auf fokussierte Fenster umgeleitet werden.

Außerdem setzt Pop!_OS ab sofort auf das von Wim Taymans für Red Hat entwickelte PipeWire als neues Standard-Audioverarbeitungssystem und als Server für Audio-, Videostreams und Hardware.

Auch der Pop!_OS Shop wurde für das Release überarbeitet und hat eine neue Startseite erhalten, die jetzt die kürzlich neu veröffentlichte Apps hervorhebt. Auch das gesamte Backend des Shops hat eine entsprechende Überarbeitung erfahren.

Neue Anwendungen und Bibliotheken
Die auf AMD64 optimierten Systemabbilder von Pop!_OS 22.04 stehen bereits auf der offiziellen Website zum Download bereit und beinhalten unter anderem den insbesondere für das Spielen unter Linux relevanten, neuesten Grafikstack Mesa 22.0.1 sowie den Browser Firefox 99.0.1 und LibreOffice 7.3.2.
Die Website „9to5linux“ hat sich Pop!_OS 22.04 bereits im Detail angesehen und liefert entsprechende Impressionen.
