High-End-Notebooks im Test: AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX vs. Intel Core i9-13950HX
Mit CPUs vom Typ Ryzen 7x45HX hat auch AMD die große Desktop-Plattform ins Notebook gebracht und tritt im Test gegen Intels HX-Serie an. AMD „Dragon Range“ bietet bis zu 16 Zen-4-Kerne auf angepasstem Package und heizt Intels HX-CPUs mit bis zu 8+16 Kernen in Anwendungen und Spielen ordentlich ein.
HX: AMDs und Intels Desktop-Chips im Notebook
Desktop-CPUs in Notebooks gibt es schon seit Jahrzehnten, sie kamen aber immer auch auf dem Desktop-Package, also „gesockelt“ zum Einsatz. Die Anzahl entsprechender, zumeist sehr klobiger Endgeräte war klein. Doch seit dem vergangenen Jahr ist alles anders, denn seitdem bietet Intel die großen Desktop-CPUs auf einem verlötbaren Package auch ganz offiziell für den Einsatz im Notebook an.
Intel hat vorgelegt
Intels HX Serie feierte ihre Premiere im Jahr 2022 auf Basis von Alder Lake mit bis zu 8+8 Kernen als späte Ergänzung der 12. Generation mobiler Core-CPUs und wurde bereits im Januar 2023 mit bis zu 8+16 Kernen in der 13. Generation neu aufgelegt. Den Fokus legte der Konzern in der 2. Generation direkt auf Gaming-Notebooks und die Topmodelle der kooperierenden OEMs setzen quasi unisono auf diese Plattform. Die bekannten H- und HK-Modelle auf Basis dedizierter Notebook-Dies finden sich darunter (und nicht günstiger als zuvor) im Portfolio wieder.
AMD zieht nach
AMD musste allein für das Prestige nachlegen, wenngleich der Markt ein eher kleiner ist. Doch ohne ein Halo-Produkt geht es wie in vielen anderen Bereichen auch hier nicht. Geboren war „Dragon Range“.
Der Ansatz von AMD ist dabei Intels ziemlich ähnlich: Warum nicht das, was im Desktop funktioniert, auch im Notebook umsetzen? Ähnlicher sind sich die Chips in den letzten Jahren ohnehin immer mehr geworden, wenn nicht sogar gleich. Die bestimmende Variable in der Gleichung ist letztlich die TDP: Selbst die schnellsten Desktop-CPUs können mit nur 65 oder lediglich 45 Watt betrieben werden, wo Notebook-CPUs mit viel Leistung in der Regel liegen – und auf Wunsch auch oft wesentlich mehr verbrauchen dürfen.
In der Firmware (Spannungs-Takt-Kurve (V/F), max. 5,4 statt 5,8 GHz) angepasst und vor allem auf ein anderes Package gesetzt, wird so aus dem Ryzen 9 7000 im Desktop mit seinen drei Chips (zwei 8-Kern-Chiplets und der I/O-Die) auf einem LGA-Package (AM5) ein Ryzen 9 7000 im Notebook mit drei Chips auf einem BGA-Package (FL1).

Sockel FL1 (BGA) vs. AM5 (LGA)
Das BGA-Package für den Sockel FL1 setzt auf 1.763 Kontaktflächen und ist damit ganz ähnlich aufgestellt wie der Sockel AM5 mit 1.718 Kontaktflächen. Auch das Format der CPUs ist mit 40 × 40 mm identisch.
Auf Nachfrage von ComputerBase, wie es um die Langlebigkeit dieses Sockels im Notebook bestellt ist, antwortete AMD bewusst diplomatisch: „We do not comment on unannounced products or roadmaps.“ Für Sockel AM5 hat der Hersteller hingegen eine sehr lange Laufzeit offiziell ausgegeben.
Traditionell ist das Notebook-Package mit einer umrandenden Erhöhung für die Auflage des Kühlers versehen. Der äußerst charakteristische Heatspreader der Ryzen 7000 mit seinen vielen Aussparungen wird im Notebook einfach umgangen.
AMD „Dragon Range“ im Überblick
Vier Modelle hat AMD in der größten Serie der Ryzen-7000-Mobile-Generation vorgestellt.
Vier CPUs mit 6 bis 16 Kernen
Die beiden großen Modelle setzen wie Ryzen 9 7950(X/X3D) und Ryzen 9 7900(X/X3D) auf zwei CPU-Chiplets, die beiden kleineren sind dann (wie bei Ryzen 7 und Ryzen 5 im Desktop) nur noch mit einem statt zwei CCDs für ihre acht respektive sechs Kerne ausgestattet, der halbierte L3-Cache ist das klare Indiz dafür. Alle Ryzen 7x45HX bieten im I/O-Die eine zwei CU „starke“ RDNA-2-iGPU, so dass Notebooks eine in der Regel in diesen Systemen verbaute dGPU auf dem Windows-Desktop schlafen schicken können. Zu mehr als Video- und Desktop-Wiedergabe ist diese iGPU nicht gedacht.
Unter den Desktop-Chips hat AMD die APU-Familie Phoenix platziert. Bei den Sechs- und Achtkernern gibt es eine gewisse Schnittmenge, wo nach den Vorlieben entschieden werden kann, sofern die iGPU keine Rolle spielt. Bei der bietet Phoenix mit bis zu zwölf RDNA-3-CUs nämlich die deutlich potentere Ausbaustufe.
TDP in Theorie und Praxis
Beide Hersteller spezifizieren ihre HX-Prozessoren mit 55+ Watt TDP. Intel gibt darüber hinaus einen PL2-Wert von 220 Watt preis (mehr geht nicht). Bei AMD gibt es eine solche Angabe nicht, während 230 Watt im Desktop als PPT die offizielle Obergrenze bei den großen Ryzen 7000 mit 170 Watt TDP sind. Am Ende entscheidet bei beiden Herstellern ultimativ der Notebook-Hersteller, wie hoch es gehen darf – je nach Notebook und Profil. Spätestens bei dauerhaft hoher Last spielt auch das Kühlsystem eine Rolle. Das Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 mit „bis zu 65 Watt TDP“ startet mit bis zu 130 Watt, kann diesen Wert aber nicht halten – weiter unten mehr dazu.
Nichtsdestoweniger sind die bis zu 130 Watt eine Zahl, mit der man arbeiten und die CPUs auch erstmals etwas genauer einsortieren kann. Denn in dieser Region spielen auch Desktop-CPUs, wenn sie ihr Powerlimit nicht völlig ausspielen, sondern in einem sparsameren Eco-Modus gefahren werden. Dies hat bekanntlich nur minimale Auswirkungen auf die Performance, aber umso deutlicher auf den Energiebedarf – exakt das zählt im Notebook.
Das Testmodell: Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 (2023)
Als Testmuster für diesen Dragon-Range-Artikel stand der Redaktion das von AMD gestellte Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 (2023) zur Verfügung.
Das High-End-Gaming-Notebook kombiniert den schnellsten Dragon-Range-Prozessor alias AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX mit einer Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 Laptop GPU (max. 150+25 Watt), 32 GByte RAM, einer 1 TByte großen SSD und dem 17 Zoll großen 240-Hz-Display.

Wie zuletzt das MSI GT77 Titan mit Intel Core i9-13950HX weist auch das Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 einen kleinen Schönheitsfehler auf, was das Thema Arbeitsspeicher angeht: Beim MSI-Notebook konnte das System durch Vollbestückung über vier Speicherbänke nur mit DDR5-4000 statt den maximal möglichen und beworbenen DDR5-5600 gefahren werden, im Asus-Notebook läuft er immerhin mit DDR5-4800 und liegt damit nur einen Bruchteil unter dem maximal Möglichen von DDR5-5200.
Leistungsanalysen
Leistungsvergleiche zwischen CPUs in Notebooks sind stets eine Kunst für sich, denn kein Notebook gleicht dem anderen und jeder Hersteller kocht in Bezug auf die Leistungsaufnahme (je nach Profil) sein eigenes Süppchen. In Form von Leistungsprofilen, mal mit oder ohne Windows-Energiesparplan, kommt es schnell trotz eigentlich identischer Hardware zu massiven Unterschieden. Anhand von zwei respektive drei Profilen hat ComputerBase zuletzt neben den Herstellereinstellungen auch die reale Leistungsaufnahme geprüft und dabei ermittelt, was genau denn bei vielen CPU-Leistungsaufnahmen wirklich herauskommt. Denn erst so lässt sich das Produkt bewerten.

Im Manuell-Modus geht auch noch eine TDP-Einstellung mit 130 Watt – für alle drei Parameter der gleiche Wert. Hier hat das Kühlsystem aber massiv zu kämpfen und 90 °C werden flott erreicht und überschritten – der Wert wird so nur kurz gehalten. Immerhin sind so aber noch einmal 600 respektive 1.500 zusätzliche Punkte in kurzen Tests wie CB20/CB23 drin.
AMD hat im Reviewer's Guide Cinebench R23 herangezogen, um die Effizienz darzulegen – also die positive der Ryzen 7000HX und die negative vom Intel Core i9-13000. Doch so schwarz-weiß ist es wie üblich nicht, wie die Tabelle bereits darlegt: Für die letzten 1.000 Punkte kann auch AMD gern 30 Watt zusätzlich aufnehmen.
Auf ein derart gutes Ergebnis wie bei AMD in seinem Labor-Test war mit dem Sample in der Redaktion kein Beikommen: Entweder fehlten bei ungefähr gleichem Verbrauch 10 Prozent Leistung, oder es wurde die gleiche Leistung mit mindestens 20 Watt mehr erreicht. Im ComputerBase-Test stehen am Ende zwei Extreme gegenüber: 34.000 Punkte bei 125 Watt für AMD und 32.000 Punkte bei 135 Watt für Intel. Ja, AMD ist effizienter, aber wirklich gravierend oder ausschlaggebend ist das nur durch Cinebench R23 dargelegt keinesfalls.
Blender zeigt hohe Effizienz von Dragon Range
Das funktioniert alles auch bei Blender, allerdings wird die Leistungsaufnahme beim Überschreiten der 95-°C-Marke schneller gesenkt. Von anfänglichen 130 Watt bleiben schon nach drei Minuten nur noch 110 Watt übrig. Der Modus zeigt deshalb, dass er kein gängiger ist, der Betrieb im Performance-Profil ergibt am Ende am meisten Sinn.
Der Leistungsgewinn für den manuellen „Über-Modus“ beträgt letztlich nämlich nur rund 10 Sekunden. Und so kam die Empfehlung sowohl von AMD als auch von Asus, doch einfach beim Performance-Profil die Messungen durchzuführen, was angesichts der eigenständig gewonnenen Erkenntnisse nachvollziehbar ist.

Der zusätzliche Blick auf die Effizienz zeigt AMD hier etwas mehr im Vorteil gegenüber Intel. An der Spitze wird deutlich weniger elektrische Leistung benötigt für ein sogar schnelleres Endergebnis, aber auch ganz unten wird mit 37 Watt das geschafft, wofür Intel mindestens 55 Watt benötigt.
Leistung in Anwendungen
Die Leistungsanalyse mit dem neuen AMD-Prozessor fiel umfassend aus. Nicht nur wurden Vergleiche mit den anderen Ryzen 7000 durchgeführt, die jedoch allesamt im Desktop zuhause sind, sondern auch der Blick ins Notebook-Umfeld geworfen, wo Intels HX-Serie, aber ebenso Apple beheimatet ist.
Ryzen 9 7945HX vs. Desktop-CPUs
16 Kerne, 32 Threads – das bietet Dragon Range in Form des Ryzen 9 7945HX genau so wie ein Ryzen 9 7950X. An dessen Leistung kommt die Notebook-Lösung nicht ganz heran, zu stark taktbegrenzt ist sie. Dennoch ist die Performance hervorragend. Bei Last auf vielen Kernen wird sie einem Intel Core i9-13900K gerecht – und das bei geringerem Verbrauch. Auch der 13950HX aus dem Notebook muss viel mehr elektrische Leistung aufnehmen, um die gleiche Performance zu bieten.

Die Leistung im Vergleich zu Desktop-Prozessoren hat es bereits angedeutet: Auch im Notebook kann sich AMDs HX-Topmodell in Multi-Core-Anwendungen vor Intel schieben, in Single-Core-Szenarien liegt es wiederum leicht zurück. Unterm Strich ist AMD Dragon Range aber ein echter Konkurrent zu Intel Core i-13000HX, ein HS-Prozessor aus dem letzten Jahr spielt in einer ganz anderen Liga.

Das Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 setzt in der getesteten Variante mit Ryzen 9 7945HX ebenso wie das bereits getestete MSI GT77 Titan mit Core i9-13950HX auf eine Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 Laptop GPU, die maximal mit 150 Watt zuzüglich 25 Watt über Dynamic Boost konfiguriert werden kann (MSI: Gaming, Asus: Turbo). Damit bot sich auch der direkte Vergleich der mobilen CPUs von Intel und AMD im Notebook an.
Ryzen 9 vs. Core i9 mit RTX 4090
Genutzt wurden die Spiele aus dem bekannten Parcours, die seit dem Februar kein leistungsrelevantes Update erhalten haben. Damit die CPUs und nicht die Treiber verglichen werden, wurde auch auf dem Modell von Asus auf den GeForce 528.49 zurückgegriffen. Neben dem Profil „Turbo“, das wie das MSI GT77 Titan im Profil „Extreme“ exakt 159 Watt GPU-Leistungsaufnahme im Durchschnitt im Parcours bereitstellt, wurde auch noch das Profil „Performance“ gemessen. Es gesteht CPU und GPU in Summe etwas weniger Leistungsaufnahme zu, wenngleich der Dynamic Boost erhalten bleibt. Das Asus ROG Strix Scar 17, das Nvidia Advanced Optimus (Details) bietet, wurde so betrieben, dass der MUX-Switch die dGPU in den Benchmarks direkt ans interne Display angebunden hat.

WQHD-Benchmarks mit und ohne RT
Die Ergebnisse sprechen eine eindeutige Sprache: AMDs und Intels HX-CPUs schenken sich im Parcours wenig. Bei den FPS und Frametimes ohne RT sowie den Frametimes inklusive RT liefern sich beide Prozessoren mit derselben GPU bei derselben GPU-Leistungsaufnahme ein Kopf-an-Kopf-Rennen. Nur die FPS inklusive Raytracing sehen die CPU von Intel in allen vier Titeln vorne.

Fazit und Empfehlung
Mit den mobilen HX-CPUs bietet nach Intel nun auch AMD die großen Desktop-CPUs auf zu verlötendem BGA-Package mit leicht gesenkten Turbo-Taktraten im Notebook an.
Das Topmodell Ryzen 9 7945HX mit 16 Zen-4-Kernen kann im Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 Intels Core i9-13950HX im MSI GT77 Titan sowohl in Anwendungen als auch in Spielen Paroli bieten. Gegenüber den bis dato verfügbaren AMD Ryzen 6000 Mobile ist der Leistungszuwachs insbesondere in Anwendungen mit bis zu 100 Prozent extrem groß, die Effizienz ist deutlich gestiegen: Je nach Einstellung kann bei halbiertem Verbrauch die Leistung des „Vorgängers“ erreicht oder bei ähnlichem Verbrauch die Leistung einfach mal verdoppelt werden.
Keinen Wert legen dürfen Anwender dabei auf die iGPU, die wie im Desktop mit zwei RDNA-2-CUs wirklich nur für rudimentäre Aufgaben zu gebrauchen ist – Ryzen 6000 Mobile war mit 6 oder 12 CUs wesentlich schneller unterwegs. Doch AMD Dragon Range wird in der Regel so oder so mit dGPUs gekoppelt werden.
Das eigentliche Problem von Dragon Range ist damit weder die Leistung noch die Effizienz, es ist in dieser Generation noch mehr als ein Jahr zuvor die Verfügbarkeit: 17 Modellvarianten von Asus und Lenovo mit Zen-4-HX-CPUs von AMD stehen derzeit 122 Raptor-Lake-HX-Modellvarianten von unzähligen OEMs gegenüber. Das dürfte vorrangig an der späteren Verfügbarkeit gelegen haben, die es OEMs nicht erlaubt hat, neue (Gaming-)Notebooks mit den Nvidia GeForce RTX 4000 Laptop GPUs im Februar und März mit AMDs CPUs auf den Markt zu bringen – es stand nur Intel zur Wahl.
Das Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 mit AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX und RTX 4090 Laptop GPU mit maximal 150+25 Watt kann dabei am Ende sowohl in Sachen Leistung und Ausstattung als auch mit dem Preis überzeugen, wenn man die 4.000 Euro nicht absolut, sondern im Vergleich zum Markt betrachtet. Vergleichbare Intel-Lösungen mit RTX 4090 Laptop GPU und einem Core i9 kosten mindestens das Gleiche.

Warten auf „Phoenix“
Das Hauptaugenmerk vieler Interessenten an einem neuen Notebook mit Ryzen 7000 Mobile von AMD dürfte am Ende aber so oder so nicht auf den Dragon-Range-Varianten, sondern auf Systemen mit der neuen Zen-4-RDNA-3-APU „Phoenix“ aus der 4-nm-Fertigung liegen. Auch diese CPUs haben sich zuletzt verspätet, kommen dieser Tage jedoch endlich in den Handel. Bemustert hat AMD die Plattform bis dato nicht. ComputerBase wird sich kurzfristig um ein Testmuster bemühen.
