Moderne Grafikkarten und damit auch die APUs können deutlich mehr Berechnungen ausführen als nur für eine 3D-Grafik. Mittlerweile gibt es schon zahlreiche Programme, die den 3D-Beschleuniger für andere Aufgaben nutzen und damit der CPU in diesen Gebieten Konkurrenz machen. Doch wie gut können Grafikkarten diese Aufgaben in der Praxis erledigen? Das finden wir anhand einiger theoretischen und praxisnahen Tests heraus. Als Programmierschnittstellen kommen dabei Direct Compute und OpenCL zum Einsatz.

Beim GPU-Computing hat AMD die Konkurrenz meistens im Griff, solange die Software über eine gute GPU-Unterstützung verfügt. Dann schlagen die Trinity-APUs den Core i3-3200 durchweg und auch der Core i7-3770K muss sich meistens geschlagen geben. Auffällig ist erneut der starke Einbruch der Ein-Modul-APUs, vor allem der A4-5300 verliert teils völlig den Anschluss.
Bei reiner CPU-Beschleunigung können die Prozessoren von Intel hingegen fast immer ihre Stärken ausspielen und lassen die Trinity meistens hinter sich.
