"Red Hat Drives Linux To AMD Hammer
By Richard Karpinski
Red Hat said Tuesday that it will deliver a version of its Linux-based server software for AMD's new Hammer processor technology.
Among other features, Hammer will support both newer 64-bit versions of Linux as well as applications written for 32-bit versions. Red Hat is demonstrating a 32-bit version of its software running on a Hammer server at LinuxWorld this week.
Hammer is the code name for a new family of desktop and server processors AMD will begin to ship early next year. The 32-bit version of the chip, which will be sold under the Athlon name, is due out in the first quarter. The 64-bit version, targeted for higher-end servers, is due in 2003.
The move of Linux to 64-bit processors -- while also preserving the investment in 32-bit apps -- is crucial for enterprises that want to use Linux for more mission-critical applications. "
