Microsoft is currently experimenting with a free version of Windows 8.1 that could boost the number of people using the operating system. Sources familiar with Microsoft’s plans tell The Verge that the company is building "Windows 8.1 with Bing," a version that will bundle key Microsoft apps and services. While early versions of the software have leaked online, we understand that Windows 8.1 with Bing is an experimental project that aims to bring a low-cost version of Windows to consumers. [....] There's a new SKU, or version, of the upcoming Windows 8.1 Update 1 operating system release that is known as "Windows 8.1 with Bing." Known Windows leaker WZor revealed the existence of this new SKU a week ago. Since then, many have been trying to guess what this thing is, given that Windows 8.1 already includes Bing SmartSearch by default. (Bing SmartSearch is the built-in version of Bing that searches a user's PC -- though not mail -- OneDrive and the Web from a single query.)

This new SKU, from what my contacts are saying, is key to Microsoft's experimentation with monetization. I hear this SKU has only minor differences from the current Windows 8.1 SKUs, but that it may be a kind of placeholder for the future when consumer operating systems are, basically, free. I'm not sure if this SKU will offer OEMs and/or consumers new Bing-related incentives by the time Update 1 is made available this spring. [....]

Sehe ich auch so, jetzt wird das Zeug schon verschenkt, Verzweiflungstat. Kaufboykott wohin man schaut, keiner will es. Wenn es nicht zwangsweise auf so vielen Laptops drauf wäre weil der Hersteller nur noch Win 8 Treiber liefert, hätte Win 8 einen viel viel niedrigen Marktanteil als Vista zu seiner Zeit.

nedamal geschenkt die müssen ja verzweifelt das zeug durchdrücken wollen, aus isses.

sollten sie eine desktop only variante herausbringen ohne den kachelmüll, dann gerne, das kachelzeug gehört auf tab und co und nicht auf nen desktop.

da kann ich mir ja auch gleich den mauszeiger auf 400% aufblasen damit es zusammenpasst.

Ach ja, die Ewigen Nörgler...-.-

Ich mag mein Windows 8.1
Performant, alles kann so bedient werden wie bei Windows 7 und da ich ungerne viele Symbole auf dem Desktop habe, finde ich die Kachelübersicht nicht schlecht. Das wichtigste kommt einfach da hin und ich kann die Programme mit 2 Klicks öffnen.

Habe die Quellen jetzt nicht ganz gelesen, aber so wie ich das verstanden habe geht auch um Windows auf den PCs und daher verstehe ich jetzt deinen Kommentar nicht so ganz.

Tja, selbst kostenlos will es glaube ich niemand haben.

Hoffen wir mal, dass MS ab Win9 wieder den richtigen Weg einschlägt und nicht einfach Stur so weiter macht wie bei Win8. Sonst sehe ich da auch echt Probleme, da ich sonst auf Linux umsteigen würde, aber es für mich als Gamer halt eigentlich schlecht geeignet ist da dort kaum Spiele laufen. Naja, Dice hat ja schon angekündigt dass sie BF5 möglicherweise auch für Linux entwickeln werden. Dann währe Windows entgültig für mich gestorben, denn der Support des einzigen aktuellen benutzbaren Windows OS (Win7) ist ja auch nicht unendlich...

Die Bing Version hat nur den Suchprovider auf Bing gesetzt. Das hatte ich schon vor einer Weile entdeckt. Sie wird wohl etwas verbilligt an OEMs gehen:

Windows 8.1 with Bing helps OEMs add Windows to low-cost devices while driving end user usage of Microsoft Services such as Bing and OneDrive.

This edition of Windows sets Bing as the default search engine within Internet Explorer. Users will be able to manually change default search settings and install additional browsers of their choice.

Windows 8.1 with Bing is based on the feature set available in Windows 8.1 Core and incudes all of the latest updates, including Windows 8.1 Update. Windows 8.1 with Bing is available for 32-bit and 64-bit platforms.
