NUC9 Extreme Ghost Canyon im Test: Benchmarks und Erfahrungen
2/3Wie schnell ist der extreme NUC? Bei den nachfolgenden Benchmarks zieht ComputerBase die größten Parallelen zu aktuellen Notebooks. Denn im Grunde genommen ist auch der NUC9 Extreme wie eine Zotac Zbox und Intels reguläres NUC ja quasi ein Notebook ohne Bildschirm, wenn auch mit einer Desktop-GPU. Im Vergleich zu anderen mobilen CPUs für Laptops lässt sich am Ende am besten die Leistung einordnen, da von der Geräteart entsprechend viele aktuelle Werte vorliegen, einschließlich Ice Lake, Comet Lake und AMD Ryzen.
Doch auch der Spagat zum Desktop wird gesucht, denn gegen genau diese soll er als Small Form Factor PC bestehen – allen voran natürlich im Gaming-Betrieb, wofür die RTX 2070 Sorge tragen wird. Aber Anwendungen dürfen vom Achtkern-Prozessor ebenso profitieren.
Stromverbrauch von Leerlauf bis Last und Lautstärke
In Anwendungen knackt der NUC9 Extreme – an der Steckdose gemessen – fast die 150-Watt-Marke, was einmal mehr den Turbo-Modi geschuldet ist. Nach einer gewissen Zeit wird die Leistung des Intel Core i9-9980HK auf PL1 von 65 Watt eingebremst, rund 100 Watt liegen dann vor dem Netzteil an. Das passt durchaus ins Bild, denn im Turbo darf die CPU kurzzeitig bis zu 107 Watt (PL2) aufnehmen, um dann über längere Zeit auf 65 Watt (PL1) eingebremst zu werden. Die offizielle TDP (PL1) des Core i9-9980K beträgt 45 Watt – Intel übertaktet die CPU im Ghost Canyon also ab Werk über PL1.
Gut für einen Desktop-PC, aber zu hoch für einem Mini-PC ist die Leistungsaufnahme im Leerlauf. 34 Watt sind deutlich mehr als bei jedem regulären NUC, das Extreme-Modell spielt hier eher im Bereich von klassischen Desktop-Lösungen. Dort rangiert das ComputerBase-Testsystem mit auf Skylake basierendem Prozessor immer bei rund 42 Watt mit einer diskreten GPU. Die Differenz entsteht durch das abgespeckte Mainboard, SO-DIMM und natürlich auch ein kleineres Netzteil. Unterm Strich bleibt Skylake Skylake, auch in alternativer Verpackung.

Bei dauerhaft 65 Watt Verbrauch operiert die CPU bei Last auf allen Kernen bei etwas über 3,1 GHz, nur in den ersten beiden von zehn ohne Pause durchgeführten Läufen im Cinebench R15 (Multi-Core) kann die CPU von PL2 profitieren.
Wird nur ein Kern belastet, reichen die 65 Watt als Langzeit-Obergrenze für dauerhaft 4,8 bis 4,9 GHz Takt.
Bei der Lautstärke ordnet sich der NUC9 in Anwendungen nicht weit oberhalb der regulären kleinen Mini-PCs ein. Unter voller Last ist er hörbar, das Geräusch aber nicht penetrant aufdringlich. Einmal mehr hat Intel fünf Lüfterprofile zur Auswahl bereitgestellt, aber wieder einmal auch nur im BIOS. Unter Windows kann der Kunde nichts einstellen. Die Unterschiede zwischen den Presets sind am Ende jedoch sehr gering; Hand anlegen muss man in der Regel deshalb nicht.
Ein etwas anderes Geräusch kommt in Spielen zutage. Dann übernimmt die RTX 2070 von Asus. Der duale Lüfter arbeitet aber in ziemlich ähnlicher Geräuschlage, sodass die dann über 250 Watt, die der NUC9 Extreme aus der Dose zieht, ohne riesigen Krawall gekühlt werden.
Benchmarks in Anwendungen und Spielen
Ohne einige Vergleichswerte lässt sich das Produkt von Intel aber nicht vollständig bewerten. Dabei hilft in erster Linie ein Vergleich zu Notebook-CPUs in gleicher und ähnlicher TDP-Klasse und natürlich zum zuletzt getesteten kleineren Intel NUC sowie zur Zotac Zbox und zum Asus PN62. Allerdings werden schon beim Blick auf die nachfolgenden Eckdaten der Notebook-CPUs deutliche Unterschiede sichtbar, denn über die Leistungsaufnahme wird am Ende auch immer mehr Leistung bereitgestellt.

Solche Werte erreichen lediglich einige wenige Notebooks, die den Prozessoren einen ähnlich hohen Spielraum bei der Leistungsaufnahme einräumen – 65 Watt dauerhaft für eine 45-Watt-CPU sind allerdings selten.
Spiele profitieren natürlich von der Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070. Im Vergleich zu Notebooks und anderen kleinen PCs rangiert der Proband dann ganz weit vorn. Die Grafiklösung liegt im Vergleich zu weiteren Notebooks in Tomb Raider auf dem Niveau einer RTX 2080 Max-Q, in dem sie mit knapp 100 FPS bei Full-HD-Auflösung ebenfalls problemlos für ein flüssiges Spielerlebnis sorgt.

Dort sind vor allem unter dauerhaftem Betrieb höhere Taktraten möglich, weshalb der Core i9-9980HK am ehesten mit einem modernen Sechskern-Prozessor aus dem Desktop vergleichbar ist. Und so ist ein Gegenspieler unter anderem der neue Intel Core i5-10600K (Test) aus der Familie Comet Lake-S – eine durchaus ansprechende Leistung für den Alltag.

Wie in jeder neuen Generation ist auch der Einsatz in einer produktiven Umgebung ohne Windows problemlos möglich. Linux-Distributionen kennen selbst neueste Hardware Monate im Voraus und unterstützen diese. Ist sie wie Coffee Lake-H sogar über ein Jahr alt, ist das gar kein Problem mehr.
