Nutanix Community Edition als kostenlose VM Umgebung

Hallo zusammen,

gibt es hier Nutzer der Nutanix Community Edition?
Die CE ist nun ja schon eine ganze Weile verfügbar, aber man liest dazu tatsächlich sehr wenig.

Kurze Übersicht dazu:

Components of Nutanix Community Edition
When you deploy Nutanix CE, you will get following:

• AHV (Acropolis hypervisor with virtualization management)
• Single pane of glass control (Prism web console to manage the cluster)
• Command-line management (nCLI)
• Ability to create multi-node cluster (comprising of 1, 3 or 4 nodes)

So when you deploy Nutanix CE, you gets AHV with distributed file system (DSF) and access to prism to manage the cluster (single node or multi-node). Also you get access to command line to perform some advanced configuration and management tasks.

Limitations of Nutanix Community Edition

Since Nutanix CE is free, it comes with some limitations:

• Your cluster requires internet connectivity (outgoing traffic on tcp/80 and tcp/8443) to send telemetry data and usage statistics to Nutanix through «Pulse» mechanism.
• You must upgrade within 30 calendar days when an upgrade is available, else access to your cluster will be blocked.
• Nutanix CE might not work on every hardware and there is a chance that HBAs, NICs etc of your physical server may or may not work with Nutanix CE. If Nutanix CE is being deployed as VM, then it works in most of the cases.
• Nutanix Next account is mandatory (needs registration)
• Only community support: If there is something wrong with Nutanix CE, you can’t log a support case with Nutanix and you have to rely on Nutanix Next Community to help you out.

Geht hier eigentlich um ein Cluster Produkt, die CE ist da um sich einfach mal einen Überblick als potentieller Käufer deren Produkte einen Einblick zu verschaffen.
Im Homelab macht dass wenig Sinn bzw. erst wenn du mehrere Nodes installierst, als Singlenode profitierst du ja von dem Hyperconverged Gedanken nicht und frisst unnötig 16GB RAM pro Node.

Kostenlose Hypervisor ohne Support gibt es ja genug Alternativen mit ESXi oder KVM etc.

Wer beruflich in der IT arbeitet und bald ein Hardwaretausch vor der Tür steht und man kein Bock mehr auf den klassischen Storage Stack mit SAN und co. hat, der kann sich das mal anschauen, coole Produkte!
Die CE kann man auch vollvirtualisiert auf einem ESXi Server aufsetzen, man braucht nicht zwingend Bare Metal Blech, beruflich meist deutlich einfacher als Blech zu organisieren.

Alternative HCI Produkte wären VMware VSAN, Cisco Hyperflex, HPE Simplivity etc...
VSAN kann man auch im Homelab "mal eben" ausprobieren.

Damit kann man recht einfach verhindern, dass vorhandene Installationen weitergenutzt werden falls man sich entschließen sollte die CE einzustellen.
Das finde ich gerade auch im Homelab-Einsatz bei einem proprietären Hypervisor recht unattraktiv und hilft der Verbreitung der CE sicher auch nicht.

Ohne richtige Lizenz taugt es nix.

Proxmox finde ich da für Single Server um Welten besser.
