CachyOS: Bringt der Kernel Wechsel auf linux-cachyos-bore ein snappy System?

Ich habe hier einen älteren Mini-PC, den ich seit einigen Wochen für alltägliche Aufgaben benutze. Das klappt im Prinzip auch wunderbar, nur gibt es ab und zu Situationen, in denen sich das System träge anfühlt und ganz selten sogar für zwei bis drei Sekunden gar nicht mehr reagiert. Zum Beispiel, wenn Firefox mit mehreren Tabs gestartet wird. Dass dieser PC recht langsam ist, macht mir nichts aus, aber die seltenen Situationen, in denen das System für einige Sekunden einfriert, würde ich gerne vermeiden.

Wäre eventuell der Kernel Wechsel von „linux-cachyos” auf „linux-cachyos-bore” zielführend?

Der Mini-PC hat einen Intel Core i3-5010U Prozessor, 16 GB RAM (2 x 8 GB) und eine 256 GB SATA SSD. Es wird die interne Intel HD Graphics 5500 GPU genutzt. Installiert sind CachyOS mit KDE Plasma 6.8.2 und Wayland.

Nein, weder vor 10 Jahren noch heutzutage bringt ein anderer Kernel dir wahrnehmbare Verbesserungen.
Selbst die niedrigeren Latenzen einer nvme ssd wirst du kaum wahrnehmen, es sei denn du hast da eine wirklich schlechte Sata ssd

Aber installieren und reboot dauert weniger als eine Minute, wenn du es tun willst

Das ändert doch nur den Scheduler. Ausprobieren, aber ich glaube das eher nicht. 2-3s Stopps sind mehr als die Auswirkung eines Schedulers.

Das hört dich für mich so an, als sei einfach die CPU überlastet. Daran wird BORE wohl nichts ändern.

Ich würde im Firefox die Einstellung browser.sessionstore.restore_on_demand probieren. Vielleicht bringt das etwas Besserung.

Mein altes Notebook ist mit 8GB RAM und i7-6500U (ebenfalls Dual-Core) auch keine Rakete, aber CachyOS läuft da ziemlich geschmeidig.

AFAIK ist doch im default CachyOS Kernel BORE sowieso der aktive Scheduler?

Nichts desto trotz, rechne, egal welchen Scheduler du benutzt, nicht mit Welten an Unterschied. Messbar wird es vermutlich sein, vielleicht sogar vereinzelt spürbar. Aber Wunder vollbringt das nicht. Es verschiebt nur für bestimmte Workloads die Ausgangslage, so dass sie für bestimmte Szenaren günstiger ist, aber ggf. in anderen schlechter.

Die CPU hat aber auch ungefähr die Hälfte mehr Rechenleistung als der 5010U.

Zu beachten ist vielleicht, dass es für Kernel 7.3.x aktuell noch keine BORE Variante für CachyOS gibt. Da gibt es wohl noch Build-Fehler. Aber wenn du eh etwas experimentieren willst, warum nicht auch einen Blick auf sched-ext werfen? Da kannst du den Scheduler zur Laufzeit einstellen. Ein Blick wert wäre da z.B. scx_flash, der kann bei solchen "Hänger"-Problemen hier und da helfen. Wobei ich befürchte, dass so ein 2C/4T System, dann doch schon etwas limitiert ist.

Ich hab gestern Abend und heute morgen mit einem i5-4670K, 16GB DDR3-1600, 480GB MX500 SSD und GTX 1060 PC rumgespielt. Zuerst habe ich CachyOS installiert, aber ich hatte auch die vom TE erwähnten 1-3s Freezes, vor allem während der Installation von Spielen über Lutrix. Auf dem PC war vorher Mint mit XFCE mit einer AMD R5 230 und lief ziemlich rund verglichen mit CachyOS mit KDE. Windows 11 Pro läuft auch rund.

Ich habe linux-cachyos-bore jetzt einfach mal ausprobiert. Der wirklich langsame Intel Core i3-5010U wird dadurch zwar nicht schneller, aber die auch vorher nur selten vorkommenden Hänger von zwei bis drei Sekunden habe ich damit bisher tatsächlich nicht mehr gehabt. Ich werde das weiter beobachten. Bisher fühlt sich das System mit Bore zumindest immer verfügbar an.

Ja, das habe ich. Es sind 31 Add-ons installiert. Vielleicht sollte ich überprüfen, ob wirklich alle nötig sind. Ich denke auch über einen Wechsel zu einem anderen Browser, beispielsweise zu Brave, nach. Das Problem ist bisher allerdings die Synchronisation mit meinen anderen Geräten.

Ja, das ist irgendwie Teil der Challenge. Ich habe sogar Gefallen daran gefunden, im Alltag mit so wenig Rechenleistung auszukommen. Dabei konnte ich schon einiges über effiziente, alternative Programme lernen. Ein großer Vorteil des Mini-PCs ist, dass er völlig passiv ist.

Den gefühlten Systemstillstand habe ich nur beim Start von Firefox wahrgenommen. Nicht immer, aber ab und zu. Die CPU Last ist im normalen Betrieb in Ordnung, erreicht aber ab und zu natürlich auch 100 %, vor allem beim Starten von Programmen. Der Intel Core i3-5010U ist nun mal keine Rakete. Das System ist grundsätzlich passiv gekühlt und die Wärmeleitpaste ist frisch. Besser kann das System nicht gekühlt werden, und die CPU wird auch nicht wirklich zu heiß.

Testweise habe ich bei dem Vollausschlag ein Programm gestartet, ansonsten lief einfach Firefox.

Poste mal ein Logfile, nachdem das ein paar mal eingefroren ist in der aktuellen Session.

Da habe ich tatsächlich bisher nie nachgesehen, aber offenbar gibt es da auch kleinere Probleme. Ich habe zwar schon etwas mit ChatGPT geforscht, aber mit manchem bin ich einfach überfordert.

Hört sich nach ziemlich vielen Erweiterungen an. Da würde es sich tatsächlich lohnen, mal mit einem schlankeren Erweiterungsset zu testen.
Was ich auch noch testen würde, wäre das aktivieren/deaktivieren der Hardwarebeschleunigung im Firefox.

Die Benutzbarkeit der ui bei forderndem Hintergrundprozess ist ja auch genau die Spezialität des bore schedulers.
