Dell’s major contract makers for PCs – Foxconn Electronics (the registered trade name of Hon Hai Precision Industry), Asustek Computer, and Quanta Computer – have begun developing PC products supporting the Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) platform, according to the Chinese-language Economic Daily News today, citing industry sources.

Foxconn is currently producing AMD-based servers for Dell, the paper indicated, adding that Asustek is developing motherboards for the AMD platform. The paper also stated that Quanta is in the process of designing notebook models based on AMD processors and that the three contract makers were informed by Dell that shipments of AMD-supporting PCs will need to be ready for a global debut anytime in the future.

Foxconn, Asustek and Quanta declined to comment on the report.

Industry sources indicated, however, that the contract makers already have the ability to ship AMD-based products to Dell on the spot as soon as the vendor announces support of the platform. Sources at Taiwan chipset makers expect Dell’s adoption of AMD processors will help them raise their shares in the global chipset market.
