The new 890GX chipset and SB850 Southbridge bring native SATA 6Gbps support, a better GPU for media playback and apparently massive overclockability. Stock performance from the Asus M4A89GTD Pro/USB3 was on par with what we expected, and its overclocking performance was solid. Even the niggles with the PCI-E bandwidth didn’t prevent the board from being reasonably fast in games. With USB 3 also integrated on the board, and the neat layout (even though tall DIMMs and large CPU coolers may clash), this is a great board for getting the most out of your Phenom II or Athlon II CPU.

AMD's 890GX is ultimately a comfortable step up from 785G and provides a bevy of useful upgrades for the end user. There isn't anything particularly revolutionary here, and there arguably won't be until AMD delivers its 32nm Fusion in 2011, but there's plenty to like in the interim.
The Good
Brings SATA 6Gbps and USB 3.0 to AMD platforms
Industry-leading IGP
Will support upcoming hexa-core Phenom II X6 processors
The Bad
A little too power hungry for our liking
Still no support for eight-channel LPCM audio

The Asus M4A89GTD Pro/USB3 proved to be an excellent board and is likely the best AM3 product we have had the pleasure of working with. From the board design to the features that are supported, we have been left with a pleasant impression. Should the price come closer to the $140 they are currently asking for the M4A78T-E, the more we feel the M4A89GTD Pro/USB3 could be the real deal on a feature vs. cost basis.

CPU utilization here on the ASUS M4A89GTD-PRO/USB3 motherboard system is minimal. High Definition video will have no problem playing back on this hardware.
When all is said and done, the ASUS M4A89GTD PRO/USB3 motherboard shapes up into a very complete MediaPC/HTPC platform. Particularly when matched with AMDs value-oriented quad-core AMD socket AM3 processors. With six-core Phenom II X6 CPUs impending, our recommendation tilts slightly towards AMD 890GX boards + USB 3.0 functionality - the speed of that wonderful interface, coupled with the M4A89GTD PRO/USB3 motherboard's HDMI 1.3 output just screams HD Media PC in our books. It all depends if you're building a PC to be future proof, or a cheap-as-possible MediaPC right now.

I like the new AMD 890GX chipset. AMD has taken a couple of bold steps in the right direction with it. We see them dropping full SATA 3.0 on the board and also integrating full PCIe 2.0 even in the Southbridge. Overall, if you are an AMD owner and are looking to move forward with AMD this is the board for you.

The 890GX chipset is certainly a step forward for AMD, bringing new technologies to the masses in an effective and affordable package. The two prime features here are obviously SATA 6.0Gb/s and USB 3.0, preparing consumers for upcoming products that can fully take advantage of the serious speed these being to the table.
In terms of price, the ASUS M4A89GTD Pro/USB3 is available for approximately $150 USD, offering great value for what you get. This motherboard brings an abundance of features, ease of use, stability, overclockability, innovation, and quality to market, proving that affordable doesn't mean cheap. Indeed, the 890GX chipset and ASUS M4A89GTD Pro/USB3 are a potent combination for maximizing the potential of your Athlon II or Phenom II processor.

We already mentioned in our reference review that we like the 890GX chipset quite a lot for it's features, performance and tweakability, and especially on a board like ASUS offers here things really make sense.
What the 890GX you get to have some more features and compatibility, let's talk about that for a second. Not only will you be ready for the upcoming 6-core Phenom II X6 processors the chipset also harbors a slightly improved IGP within the Northbridge, it's a little faster and though daunting similar to AMD785, it offers the benefit of UVD 2.0 and armed with 40 Shader processors that simply opens up gateways to proper post-process of high-definition video. Especially with software like Media Player Classic HT edition this is a tremendous feature.
