Ich poste mal was zu dem Song:
Als Mike Oldfield am Nachmittag des 8. Dezember 1980 in New York aus dem Flugzeug steigt, ahnt er noch nicht, dass dies ein Abend werden sollte, der Entsetzen in der Welt auslösen würde. Oldfield quartiert sich im Virgin Records House in der Perry Street ein, nur wenige Blocks entfernt vom Dakota Building.
Am selben Abend, gegen 23:45 Uhr treffen John Lennon und seine Frau Yoko Ono vor dem Dakota Building, wo sie wohnen, ein. Sie hatten den Tag im Aufnahmestudio verbracht. Als ein Mann auf John zutritt, der schon am Vormittag ein Autogramm von Lennon geholt hat, ahnen weder John noch Yoko, dass es sich nicht um einen normalen Fan handelt. Der offenbar geistig verwirrte Mark Chapman feuert mehrere Schüsse auf John Lennon ab, der noch auf dem Weg ins Krankenhaus stirbt.
In den darauffolgenden Jahren wurden Textzeilen aus "Moonlight Shadow", wie "all she saw was a silhouette of a gun" oder "he was shot six times by a man on the run" immer wieder mit der Ermordung Lennons in Verbindung gebracht.
In einem Interview aus dem Jahre 1995, das von Gareth Randall geführt wurde, bestätigt Mike Oldfield den Einfluss von Lennons Tod auf den Song "Moonlight Shadow", weist aber darauf hin, dass der Einfluss eher unterbewusst geschehen sei. Hauptinspirationsquelle war demnach der Film "Houndini", bei dem es um die Kontaktaufnahme mit dem vestorbenen Houndini geht.
"I was staying at the Virgin Records House in Perry Street, which was just a few blocks down the road from the Dakota Building where it happened, so it probably sank into my subconscious. It was originally inspired by a film I loved - 'Houdini', starring Tony Curtis, which was about attempts to contact Houdini after he'd died, through spiritualism... it was originally a song influenced by that, but a lot of other things must have crept in there without me realising it."
Mike Oldfield, der sich mehr als Instrumentalist als als Sänger fühlt, engagierte für "Moonlight Shadow" Maggie Reilly als Sängerin. Der Song war der Auftakt zu einigen Hits, die Oldfield Anfang der Achtziger schrieb und mit verschiedenen Gastsängerinnen produzierte.
