Data considerations with hardware encryption with MLB and flash storage
The MLB and flash storage modules are paired together as part of the hardware encryption for Mac Studio (2022). Data will be lost anytime the MLB or flash storage modules are replaced. It is not possible to get data from standalone flash storage once it is removed from the computer. If the flash drives are not attached to the logic board they were paired with when the data was written to the drive, the data cannot be decrypted.
Ensure the customer has a data backup before proceeding with service.
Flash Storage
Flash storage on Mac Studio (2022) consists of two removable paired flash modules. While troubleshooting, before replacing the flash storage or MLB, ensure that the storage modules are installed in the correct positions on the MLB they are paired with. If they are placed out of order, the data cannot be decrypted. Once moved to their correct positions, the data will become accessible again. The flash storage service part ships with both modules.
When troubleshooting flash storage, remember that the flash modules are paired to the logic board. If new flash modules are installed and paired with the MLB, in an attempt to troubleshoot an issue, then data on the previous flash drives will become inaccessible.
