Das Open Source Media Center („OSMC“) – vormals Raspbmc –, das insbesondere für Einplatinencomputer der Serie Raspberry Pi konzipiert worden ist, kombiniert in der neuesten Version 2022.03 das freie Mediencenter Kodi 19.4 („Matrix“) sowie ein sogenanntes Just Enough Operating System („JeOS“) auf Basis von Debian.

OSMC geht damit einen ähnlichen Weg wie LibreELEC 10.0.1, eine Abspaltung des 2017 eingestellten OpenELEC, und bringt die freie Mediaplayer-Software Kodi auf Einplatinencomputer und Mini-PCs wie den Raspberry Pi 4.

OSMC basiert auf der aktuellen Ausgabe von Raspberry Pi OS – vormals Raspbian –, die ihrerseits Debian 11 („Bullseye“) und den Betriebssystem-Kernel Linux 5.10 LTS mit Support bis Dezember 2026 nutzt.
Das quelloffene Betriebssystem ist dabei besonders ressourcensparend ausgelegt und läuft auf Kleinstsystemen performant. Dennoch unterstützt OSMC diverse Videoformate wie WMV, VC-1 und H.264 sowie H.265 mit HEVC und 10-Bit Farbtiefe, und kann außerdem problemlos mit zahlreichen Containerformaten wie MKV, MP4, MOV, TS und M2TS umgehen. Zudem werden HDR10 und HDR10+ für entsprechendes Material mit Hochkontrastbildern sowie einem stark erweiterten Dynamikbereich unterstützt.
Das Update auf Version 2022.03 sollte ursprünglich bereits im Januar erscheinen, hat sich aber ein wenig verspätet und fiel dann umso umfangreicher aus.
We're happy to release OSMC's March update, our first update of 2022. This has a number of improvements and bug fixes. We had planned to release an update the end of January. But decided to hold off until we could release a more substantial update, as there will be a delay in getting the next significant changes out.
